The Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) system plays a central role in chemical safety within the European Union. It is important to note from the outset that there is NO publicly accessible UFI code database. UFIs are not searchable by the public, and it is not possible to determine in which country or year a specific UFI was registered. Access to UFI-related information is restricted to appointed bodies, such as poison centres, and only for emergency response purposes. Therefore, communication of information between business partners is very important.


Introduced under the CLP Regulation, the UFI connects a specific hazardous mixture placed on the market with the information submitted to poison centres. To support this system, companies rely on internal UFI code databases to manage, verify, and reference UFIs consistently across notifications and product labels.


What Is a UFI Code?

A UFI is a 16-character alphanumeric code assigned to a chemical mixture. Its primary function is to allow poison centres to quickly identify the exact composition of a product in the event of an exposure incident. Each UFI is linked to a specific formulation and must be included both in the poison centre notification and on the product label.


The UFI does not reveal the chemical composition to the public. Instead, it acts as a secure reference that enables authorities to retrieve detailed formulation data when required.

  • In the Safety Data Sheet (SDS): In some cases, the UFI appears in Section 1 of the SDS.

  • Internal company systems: Manufacturers and importers store UFIs within their formulation or regulatory compliance databases.

  • Poison centre notifications: Appointed bodies can access the UFI as part of the submitted notification data.

For users and emergency responders, the product label is the most direct and reliable source.
