I have generated a UFI code, is that enough?

We are often contacted by customers who have already generated a UFI code using the UFI generator and just want to check if this is all they need to do.

Unfortunately only generating a UFI code is not enough, as notification to poisoning centers (PCN submission) must also be arranged. If notification at the poison control center is not arranged, we are talking about an empty UFI code, since there is no data behind it. In other words, if the inspection or poison control center enters this UFI code into the system, it does not get any information about the product.

The unique formula identifier (UFI) is a unique code that is required in the submission process and on the label, or in some cases the packaging, of the products that contain a hazardous mixture.

Together with a product’s trade name, the UFI allows the poison centre to precisely identify both the product involved in a poisoning incident and the composition of the mixture contained in that product.

We have already written quite a few blog posts about UFI codes and PCN notifications, which can be found HERE.

What information is required to arrange the UFI code / PCN notification?

A brief overview of the necessary data for the successful implementation of PCN notification and obtaining a UFI code is given below:

  • CONTACT DETAILS - company name, full address, telephone number and email address

  • TRADE NAME or NAMES of the mixture

  • PACKAGING TYPE and SIZE - the packaging used to place the mixture on the market. The container type may be a ‘bottle’, a ‘box’ or an ‘aerosol can’, for example

  • PRODUCT CATEGORY - the category according to the European product categorisation system (EuPCS) - category must match the main intended use

  • UNIQUE FORMULA IDENTIFIER (UFI CODE)

  • HAZARD INFORMATION - label elements (pictograms, signal word, hazard statements, supplemental hazard information, precautionary statements)

  • TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION - likely ways in which a person might be exposed

  • PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES - physical state, colour, pH

  • at least 90 % MIXTURE COMPOSITION.

We made a UFI code CHECKLIST, which can serve as a check for the preparation of all relevant data.
