Ethanol - approval of the active substance (biocidal products)

Updated: Aug 17, 2023

According to current data from ECHA, ethanol (CAS: 64-17-5) could soon become an approved active substance for use in biocidal products.

The BPR requires the evaluation of active substances contained in biocidal products, as well as the evaluation of the products themselves before they can be placed on the EU market. ECHA published the planned submission dates, for the biocidal products active substance approval/renewal cases.

According to the Member states and competent authorities (MSCA) Assessment Reports submission plan, the planned submission date for ethanol is Q1 2024. Of course, the written date is only approximate, as it depends on the occupancy of the assessment body itself and many other criteria.

Ethanol is under review for PT 1, 2, 4 and 6:

PT 1 - Human hygiene

PT 2 - Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals

PT 4 - Food and feed area

PT 6 - Preservatives for products during storage

Currently, biocidal products containing ethanol can be sold according to national transition rules (national register of biocidal products). After the approval of the active substance, the product will need to undergo an authorisation procedure.

It should be noted that biocidal products, like all other dangerous chemicals, also require a UFI code and notification to a poison centres, which we are happy to arrange for you.
